Child support covers more than you may think

One of the most important decisions to be made during a divorce is that of child custody and child support. If a divorcing couple is unable to come to an agreement regarding child custody, the courts will decide. They may also award the custodial parent child support payments to help cover the expenses of raising a child. While many people think that these expenses will only cover a child's basic necessities, such as food, clothing and shelter, it is important to understand that child support payments can be used well beyond just the basic necessities.

Child support payments can also be used for a child's medical expenses and health care. This may include doctor co-pays, prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs and health supplies, as well as eye-care costs and dental costs. It may also be used for costs associated with a child's education, including school supplies, tuition, as well as fees and costs for extra-curricular activities, such as field trips, clubs and sports equipment.

Assuring that a child leads a happy and healthy childhood is a primary goal for the courts. This is why child support payments may also be used to cover a child's entertainment. This could include trips to the movies, fairs, amusement parks and even vacation. It may also be used towards a child's transportation, whether it is running errands or taking a child to and from visitations with the non-custodial parent.

When heading to the courts during a divorce, it is important to have an understanding of the laws. This is especially true with regards to children from the marriage, as the courts will need to come to a decision with regards to child custody and child support.
